BFT Access Control Installation: The Irvine Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT access control systems across Irvine, with most complete keypad, card reader, and receiver installations running between $650 and $1,400 depending on your BFT model and how much wiring is already in place. Most access control install calls are completed same day when we have the part on the truck, which we usually do. The typical call starts the same way: the keypad stops responding, the remote works but the keypad won’t, or the system starts opening and closing on its own at odd hours.

BFT access control is reliable equipment, but Irvine’s coastal air and hard water are unforgiving to anything with a circuit board exposed to the elements. We see more BFT access control failures from corrosion on the keypad contacts and water intrusion into the reader housing than from any electronic fault. Victor Salinas has been working on BFT gates in Orange County for close to three decades, and he still believes most access control problems are a failed part, not a failed system.

If your BFT keypad, card reader, or receiver has died, this page tells you what it costs to replace, what to check before calling, and what’s involved in a proper installation.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT access control parts cover three main family lines in Irvine: the Rigel series (Rigel 5, Rigel 4), the Icon series, and the older Perseus and Deimos control boards still running on plenty of Irvine driveways. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit is that BFT keypads and readers are not one-size-fits-all. A Rigel 5 keypad will not talk to a Perseus board without an interface module, and we’ve seen plenty of Irvinians order a keypad online only to find it’s meant for a European 433 MHz market and won’t pair with a US-spec receiver.

When we arrive, the first thing we do is read the board label. BFT stamps the model number and firmware version on the control board itself, usually inside the plastic housing mounted near the gate hinge post. That number, not the keypad face or the remote, tells us which access control part will actually work.

On OEM versus aftermarket: BFT factory parts carry a premium, and for boards and receivers, we recommend them. For keypads and antenna wiring, quality aftermarket equivalents from Italian and domestic suppliers work fine and save money. We’ll give you the straight answer on what’s worth spending OEM money on.

Ironworks Gate Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT. We stock BFT-compatible parts and also carry components for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad works intermittently, especially after rain. This is water getting past the keypad gasket or into the housing. The fix is usually a new keypad plus a fresh seal, not a board replacement. In Irvine’s marine layer season, we see this call every week.
  • Remote works but keypad won’t, or vice versa. The receiver on the board is failing, or the keypad wiring run has corroded at the terminal block. It’s rarely both parts at once, which tells us exactly where to look.
  • Gate opens on its own at random intervals. This is a failing receiver picking up stray signals or a shorted keypad wire. It’s also a security problem, so we treat it as a priority call. For most Irvine homeowners, this is the symptom that finally triggers the call.
  • Keypad buttons require hard, repeated pressing. The membrane contacts under the buttons wear out, typically after 5 to 7 years of daily use. Coastal salt air accelerates this in Irvine neighborhoods west of the 5.
  • Display blank or showing error code, but gate motor still runs. Power to the keypad is interrupted or the keypad’s board has failed. The gate operator and the access control are separate circuits, so the gate can work fine while the keypad is dead.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Irvine, expect these installed price ranges for BFT access control replacement:

  • BFT keypad replacement (Rigel or Icon series): $320 to $480 installed, including the keypad, mounting hardware, and wiring verification.
  • BFT card reader or proximity reader swap: $380 to $550 installed, depending on reader type and whether new fobs or cards are needed.
  • BFT receiver or antenna replacement: $250 to $420 installed, including re-pairing all existing remotes.
  • Full access control retrofit on an older BFT board: $850 to $1,400, including keypad, receiver, antenna, and control board if yours can’t support modern access control hardware.

The range is driven by the age of your system, how much original wiring can be reused, and whether your BFT board needs a firmware update or a retrofit module. Every job has a written quote before we touch a single bolt. You know the number before we start, and the number doesn’t change when we’re done.

DIY or Call Us?

Access control runs on low voltage, so there’s no electrocution risk, but the danger with DIY on BFT systems is real in a different way: a keypad wired backwards can short the control board and turn a $400 keypad swap into a $900 board replacement. We’ve cleaned up enough of those jobs in Irvine to say this plainly. If your BFT access control is misbehaving, the safe DIY step is limited to checking the obvious: power to the system, a tripped GFCI outlet near the gate, and whether the keypad housing has visible cracks or water inside. That’s where a homeowner should stop.

If you’ve found a replacement keypad online, the risk is compatibility, not installation. BFT firmware versions don’t always play nice across model years. We’re happy to install a part you’ve bought, but we’ll warn you first if it’s the wrong version for your board. Better yet, call us at (213) 566-7552 before you buy anything. We’ll tell you over the phone what part your system actually needs.

If it can be fixed right, we fix it right. If it can’t, we’ll tell you that too.
