DIY or Call Us?
There are things an owner can safely check on a DoorKing operator. You can look at the capacitor for visible bulging or oil leakage. You can confirm the breaker hasn’t tripped and the main power switch on the operator is on. You can listen for the hum I described earlier, because that tells us a lot over the phone.
What you shouldn’t do is open the motor housing and start swapping parts with the capacitor still wired in. That capacitor stores enough charge to knock you on your back, even with the power off. Gate motors are not like garage door motors; the operator is wired into the home’s main power at 120 or 240 volts, and the torque involved in moving a 600 pound gate leaf is not forgiving. If the motor itself has failed, there’s no honest way around the fact that replacing it means working with live terminals, high-torque gearboxes, and a gate that needs to be mechanically locked out during the swap.
